Elton John Vows to Make Hip Hop Record

Posted August 25, 2006 — in Music News

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - After 40 years of performing rock music, pop ballads and movie soundtracks, Elton John is looking to cross over to yet another musical genre — hip hop.

“I want to bring my songs and melodies to hip hop beats — a bit like ‘No Diggity’ by Blackstreet,’” John said in excerpts of an interview posted on Rolling Stone’s Web site on Friday.

John told the music magazine he would like to work with producer Dr. Dre and a variety of artists, although he had yet to contact them.

“I want to work with Pharrell (Williams), Timbaland, Snoop (Dogg), Kanye (West), Eminem and just see what happens. It may be a disaster, it could be fantastic, but you don’t know until you try,” he said.

Disgusting.

  1. Stupidest thing I have ever heard of in my entire life. What’s next? Alan Jackson wants to make a dance record with Christina, please……

  2. Haha, disgusting indeed. How awkward it would be to have to turn down an offer from someone like Elton John. Especially since he’s trying to do something different, however awful the idea may be.

  3. I think what he ment was that his songs and melodies would be turned into beats or used as a sample for the listed rappers to track over. Mabey he would do the chourus or backing vocals, but I doubt that we would see Elton rapping anytime soon. In that context I can see it, after all his duet with Eminem was successful.

  4. What’s disgusting: Hip-hop or Elton attempting some form of it? How about listening without pre-judging it and then damning it if you don’t like the result.

  5. I’d much rather pre-judge it.

  6. Elton’s a talented mofo. I doubt he’s gonna get a grill and start flowing. He may bust some rhymes, but hey, I dont mind. When I picked up Steve Vai’s new album REAL ILLUSIONS: REFLECTIONS, there was this wild track called “FireWall”… definitely something I didnt expect from Steve Vai… and its a smash in my book. Ya never know till ya hear it!
