Why was this space wasted talking about an American Idol schlep and not a band that is waiting to be discovered?

Kelly Clarkson had a vision and "didn't allow herself to be controlled by a Puppet Master?" Oh come one, how naive are you? The moment she signed on the dotted line with American Idol, BEFORE she even auditioned, she signed away her rights to even decide what on her wardrobe, let alone "artistic" (term applied loosely) direction. You can be assured that every move is carefully scripted by her handlers; if they decided polka was the next big thing, she'd be singing polka and there wouldn't be a thing she could do about it. Witness her appearance in that gawdawful flick "From Justin To Kelly." Not only has she publically criticized the film, but she's also provided herself with a convenient out by saying that she was only involved out of contractual obligation. The trouble with that is that means everything else is contractual obligation; she can't pick and choose which career moves she wants to take credit for and blame a binding contract if she bombs. Can't have it both ways. To be fair, very few pop acts in this day and age are afforded the degree of control you suggest here; the record company just doesn't trust their instincts. That's why their songs are written for them, their albums produced for them, their whole direction mapped out (based on carefully examined market research), from choreography (why on earth did this ever become a factor in making music? Save that crap for Dancing With The Stars!)to decisions on direction (i.e. her shift towards pseudo "rock" music). She shows up and sings, and as long as she's under contract to Davis' and company, she'll do as she's told.

You know, I just would really like to know when the art behind the artist became far subserviant to the "imaging" of the artist. I'm with you here........ just another vision gone awry. Imaging has always been important, and always will be, but I think substance in an artist is what keeps people coming back for more after 10, 20, 30 years. That is exactly why an artist who was making substance-filled music even 30 years ago can still pack out arenas and sell loads of albums. I dont need to list names......... it's quite obvious who they are. Now (ivory-tower record elitists) please go and sign someone who might be able to sell records for you for 30 years instead of 30 days.
