MTV Canned TRL
Posted February 15, 2007 — in Music News

KOAR posted weeks ago that it looked like MTV was going to cancel TRL since kids are no longer tuning in. According to sources MTV execs have officially canned TRL and fired the people responsible for its production.
MTV just canned 250 employees and the bloodbath isn’t over yet. MTV is facing the challenges of a changing society and the new frontier of the digital age.
Recent data from Nielsen media peg TRL’s viewership at 393,000, down from almost 600,000 in 2001.
Update - When MTV heard the press leak of TRL being canned, the CEO immediately responded with an open letter stating that TRL will air ‘as always’. Meaning TRL will air until they find a replacement.
Bloodbath that’s hilarious. Kind of ironic they air a show about trying to find someone a music job.

simple MTV .. just like the downloading issue .. cut the crap ..
1) Get rid of Real World (No one cares anymore)
2) Put music videos back on
3) Focus on upcoming artists that actually sell and aren’t obsecure
4) Repeat

As much as we all want to watch our favorite videos, don’t count on MTV. MTV can’t play music videos because of poor ratings. Its a business decision. Remember, people have tuned out listening to “new’ music for good reasons..it sucks. Until new music catches people attention again, we will continue to see the decline..promise!! Warner Brothers, EMI will continue to collapse. You cannot peddle garbage. How can MTV play garbage? well, they did..hence, No more music videos.
For now, its all about YouTube.

Fact of the matter is, MTV had lost their music status some time ago, but now the digital age has sealed their coffin.

I completely agree with these points. MTV has tried to be a jack of all trades with pop culture but forgot what they are good at. This is combined with our generations over-saturation of poor quality mainstream music. I think industry big-wigs need to read this site more and get the hint. =)

I agree with all!!!!! I look at Mtv like I see my Detroit Motro industry, You had it GREAT for many many years and now your arropgance is catching up with you!!!!
There is SO much great NEW music that people will never hear because we are NOW being RUN by a generation of Sell first, Nurture second, A&R people….Rest in peace Mtv…..

Also, by playing non-music programming, MTV TOLD the kids NOT to watch music videos! For years, they slowly took them away…conditioning kids to look elsewhere. Even this morning, 6am, I had MTV on. After a long commercial break, they played the new Lily Allen video. Then went back to commercials after ONE VIDEO!

Screw MTV. It’s for 12 year old girls that want to be 22. With videos on MTV or not, the music industry still sucks major dong right now anyway. If they brought music videos back, you’d just be watching terrible artists perform mediocre, formulaic songs. It’s not like the videos that accompany these songs have evolved in the past 10 years either.
Maybe MTV should try airing shows that don’t brainwash 12 year olds into thinking that everyone needs to be rich and materialistic. That would be a nice first step. At least Beavis & Butthead still had a musical element. Step 2: Major labels need to find some A&R guys with a pair of ballz. I can’t get excited about rock these days. It has NO identity. It has that warm “created-in-a-lab” feeling. The label heads aren’t creating an environment condusive to allowing A&R’s to make good decisions.

Business decisions .. the correct decision would be putting videos back on. Fuse is on the down-slope with the same indie/emo .. hard to understand emo bands that people pass on after the first 3 hours of Steven’s Untitled Rock Show. Now Fuse has a knack for playing random old horror flicks at stupid hour slots. If its me .. correct me .. but all music media is going down hill. I miss MTV X & Much Music (no longer with Comcast).

This show just became one big commercial with 10 second videos.

GOODBYE MTV! You and the labels have robbed us of good music for too long. I hope real world, my sweet 16 and all the other shit on mtv die a slow horrible death. You are the cancer that tried to kill music but music is making a come back and you are too stupid to realize it.
