  • My Favorite Highway will be performing tomorrow at Jammin Java (Virginia), 8:00pm. Will be a sold out gig. Expect some label reps. For more information contact Dan Friedman. Check out the track
Murder On The Radio . After one listen you will be hooked. This track could be a smash.
  • David Geffen the music and film producer is taking a stab at politics. Dave loves his name in the press. Gotta love hollywood producers getting involved with politics. Geffen, who was a co-host of an Obama fundraiser Tuesday night in Los Angeles, saved even sharper criticism for former president Bill Clinton.
  • Top 40 Station Adds Unsigned track.
Top myspace artist One Less Reason’s new track “If You Want Me” has been added to Jackson’s, MS top 40 station Y101. The Program Director Nate West heard the buzz on the band and after listening to the song he decided to add the track, which is not an easy feat today. His instincts are correct, “If You Want Me” is reacting and is a top requested song. For more information email the management.

UPDATE: One Less Reason just SOLD OUT the 800 capacity venue Hals N Mals in Jackson, MS. Now if it works in this market, by theory, it should translate in most markets.

  1. “if you want me” is just more of the same. it is nice to see a staion add an unsigned act but this is not going to solve radio’s biggest problem….

  2. The My Favorite Highway track sounded good right up until the vocals kicked in (~20 sec). If this dreck is being called a hit then we’ve got big problems (which, of course, we already knew)…

  3. The song is a smash, it doesnt matter if you like it or not.

  4. I knew a contractor that was remodeling Geffen’s apartment in NYC a few years back. He asked him to install two way mirrors in the guest bathrooms. Creepy.

  5. My Fav Highway song isn’t bad, but it’s no smash. Industry people are settling for calling things “smash hits” that they wouldn’t have touched 10 years ago. People have lowered their standards too much. The same goes for that One Less Reason band. We’ve heard that song a million times before. Even if it is reacting, it just means that radio has trained people to have terribly dumbed down taste.

  6. BTW…Those One Less Reason guys will need a major “style” overhaul if they ever want to be signed. Kids don’t want to see a bunch of dudes in their late 20’s, early 30’s dressed like 1999.

    Comment by TO — February 23, 2007 @ 5:23 am

  7. you know…for a bunch of drunken loosers out of chicago we should be on K.O.A.R.news board.seems that the more you suck the more attention you get.we wear cloths from Walmart and are in our 30’s. like T.O.said…with the dumbing down of peoples taste in music we should fit right in..so how about it K.O.A.R.??

  8. Let’s watch this band get signed too. Here will be a direct translation of radio play -to- cd sales -to- a band being signed. Mediocre song? Yes. We’ve heard it before. The American public likes things that are easy to watch and hear. Let’s take Nickleback’s latest album: It sold millions. Is there anything on that disc that is ground breaking? Absolutely not. It’s not carving any new paths. So why did it sell so many copies? Because the American public had heard ‘it’ before, is comfortable with it, and doesn’t like their intellect challenged with music that is actually inspired.
We’re currently trying to get radio play as a local unsigned act. Think it will happen? For Godsake we had Tool’s producer record/produce our disc.
You be the judge of what the industry should be and hear. It takes a village to break an act. But remember that the village also does like familiar things.

  9. I don’t think MFH are horrible. They have a couple really great songs and with the overhauling majors do, I think they have real hit potential with a few tracks. Not to mention, their live show is solid.

But I have to wonder if that’s enough. They’re inconsistent and lack direction, but it sounds (to me, anyway) that they are writing more for placement than a platinum record, and in that effort, they will most likely succeed.

  10. One less Reason was signed to Universal Records back in 2003 .. by A&R, Monte Lipman, he took them under his wing .. they we’re then dropped cause of issues with their CBS radio relationship. I’m not sure another major will give them a chance .. a label like Bieler / Cement Shoes / Immortal would be right for these guys to build up more ground.

    Comment by realmad — February 23, 2007 @ 9:26 am

  11. Again, say what you want..My Favorite Highway are great live performers and they write solid songs. One Less Reason is another great live band and write smash songs. Both bands continue to play sold out gigs. Both have solid online activity. Anyhow, its up to fans and the public, not us……

  12. “You’re Making it Come Alive” is better…
I’d expect “Murder on the Radio” to be awesome with some major label paid production though.

    Comment by Dallas — February 23, 2007 @ 12:41 pm

  13. I’m not cutting up OLR. They’re a great band .. I just don’t think a major label will help right now .. seeing labels are pro-indie rock bands right now. They would be better off with an indie label that cares about their style. Oh wait I forgot anyway .. Majors are buying all the indies.

  14. “Anyhow, its up to fans and the public” not us……we are the public and the fans….

  15. I think this could be a big hit. Not saying I love it though. If I am going to be a fan I’ll need the vox to be a little deeper and little more….ballsy..I guess I’m thinking something like Pete Yorn.

  16. +1 on ‘we are the public/fans’ - everybody is quick to point out that either a.) it’s not their own fault, or b.) they don’t have the power to do anything about it….
    it’s called deflection.

  17. Man i am so sick of image rock, The labels and radio are in a world of trouble and it is because they have been playing all this image rock, guys with emo haircuts and girl pants…. oh and terrible music!! I am not in a band, I am an average listener that loves music and we Are ready for music not the latest fashion trend! Nickelback sells because they have great songs as well as Three doors and shinedown etc. And you guys can sit on here and complain all day but that is something that you cant buy at Hot topic, it’s something you are born with. One less reason will be a huge band, I own both cd’s and every song on both cd’s is top notch. We (the public/fans) are ready for some real music… you have pushed your emo laden crap on us long enough and now everyone is dealing with the gag reflex of the public. It is time for a change and it is coming.

    Comment by Nate — February 25, 2007 @ 4:44 pm

  18. One Less Reason will not be huge. I don’t see them doing a thing.

  20. one less reason is the pride and joy of jackson tennesee.they’ve been around a while.we’ve raised them well.and we think theyre defintly ready to get more publicity.they’re the most ideal you can get to a growing band.there’s already people in other states that have heard of them.but they need a boost.they have many hit songs.i think it would be anything but a mistake to sign this band.theyre seriously wicked.

    Comment by adam — February 25, 2007 @ 5:19 pm

  21. One Less Reason deserves to get somewhere. I have been a fan for going on 7 years now and they’ve put so much effort in what they have right now. Sure, some people can’t stand them but what band do you know of that EVERYONE just loves?!?!?! THERE ISN’T ONE! So if you have a negative opinion…why bash them by posting it??

    Comment by Heather — February 25, 2007 @ 5:21 pm

  22. One Less Reason is frickin awesome. If the labels wanna make money, then market OLR

    Comment by Devin — February 25, 2007 @ 5:22 pm

  23. As a conceret promoter and club owner who cant stand emo and trendy rock bullshit, i love bands like “one less reason”, nickelback”, “3 doors down”, etc, etc. i think they write songs and put on live shows the majority of america likes and supports. these type bands are this generations “bon-jovi”, motley crue, poison and so and so forth. Ive promoted 2 one less reason show’s in the last 6 months and watched them go from zero radio support and 150 people in the audiance to having a hit single here in jackson,ms. and playing a sold out concert with 1,000 people at it last night. Now if that doesnt tell you that the radio listening public is responding and like this band then you obviously need to remove your head from whatever ass you currently have it planted in.

  26. Ok first of all lets just say this. I have loved One Less Reason for a very long time. Not many of my friends had ever heard of them until i introduced them to their music. needless to say they were hooked the first time they heard their music. i have seen them live many times and i have to say i get goosebumps everytime. i have yet to hear a song that i cannot relate to in some way. there is always a one less reason cd close by me at all times. and anybody who doesnt think they have the talent, the heart, and the drive to make it needs to open their eyes and ears because it will happen. they are awsome and aare a bunch of really cool guys. so any record label would be an absolute fool not to jump on the chance to sign olr. all those who dont WILL regret it one day. just sit back and see…..

    Comment by Melissa — February 25, 2007 @ 5:28 pm

  27. Just for the record, the Nate that commented above is not me but I do agree that One Less Reason could be a huge band if signed. They already have a HUGE following on myspace. They have several songs that (I think) could be great for the Active Rock format as well as a couple of songs that could be good for the Top 40 format. “If You Want Me” is just one example. This song would be a hit on a national level if given the airplay. The song is already performing well for us. We can tell by the listener reaction we are getting with the phones as well as our online callout. By the way, I am not the Program Director but the Assistant Program Director. My PD does agree though.

    Comment by Nate West — February 25, 2007 @ 5:29 pm

  28. One Less Reason lays down a better sound than most of the saccharrine, smarmy garbage on my local radio station. No nu-metal, whiney, emo-esque malarkey. Solid rock-n-roll with a dose of listenability… beats the pants off the crap most labels are pushing. Wait, is that what they wanted to hear? Radio music these days sucks ass. CHANGE IT!

  30. Not only will One Less Reason be Huge, but I think they will hit number one. They have the sound that not only teenage kids, but adults want to hear. Listen to the words, it’s everyday life!!! We all can connect with them, and thats what Music is about… I have both cd’s and I have been to their show, and I can’t wait to see them again. They should add more of their songs, and see what reaction they get then….

  31. One Less Reason is the most amazing band I have heard in my entire life. I know it sounds corny, but when I listen to thier music, it makes me forget about all the bad things in my life. One Less Reason is like thearpy for me. Their music makes me happy and completely calm. I am glad to have heard thier music beacuse it is amazing and they are amazing. And what’s even more amazing is that they care about thier fans and most importanly, music. I really can’t even begin to explain how much I love One Less Reason. I know they will be succesful in everything they do. They are already successful independatly, which is pretty hard these days with all the talent-less bands that get signed to crappy record labels. I want to hear real music with real meaning, and One Less Reason delivers that 110%.

  35. 2007 is here. Time for a change. For the better! ONE LESS REASON’s time to get out there and do what they do best. They deserve the chance to prove to ANY label out there that they got what it takes. More than this crap that the mainstream is feeding us. The era of ignorant rap music of bling and hoez is over. The time for white kids with tight pants is getting old. The years of this retro terrible, no talent bullshit is done!….. It’s time for real music. IT’S TIME FOR ONE LESS REASON!

  38. One Less Reason is a band that has been tearing up stages around the country fr a while now, but they havent received the attention they deserve from labels. They are one of the few bands I’ve seen that should have a label for a number of reasons.1)they have a style that is all their own and aren’t cheap knock-offs of other bands,2)their debut album(Everydaylife)has sold over 20000 copies independantly, and 3)they have one of the best live shows in rock.

    Comment by ethan — February 25, 2007 @ 6:11 pm

  39. I think that One Less Reason is one of the best bands out right now. It’s a shame that they aren’t on a major label. They have music that actually means something. If they were on a major label and were able to be marketed so that people would actually be exposed to their music, I think the following would be incredible. I was introduced to the band and I fell in love with their sound, words… everything. I’ve purchased both albums and listen to them non-stop. Every person I introduce them to absolutely loves them too. People can relate to this music. It has heart. Soul. These are things that a lot of “popular” music today lacks. Isn’t it time that we actually bring back music that means something? As far as marketability, I mean, hell, I can’t name one song that wouldn’t be a hit. So what are the labels waiting for? This is what the public wants to hear. They should embrace One Less Reason and help get them out there so that their music can be heard.

  41. ONE LESS REASON is one of the best bands I’ve heard. Someone needs to sign them. As for them needing a style overhaul I STRONGLY DISAGREE, they are very appealing to the 20 something crowd.

  44. i have been listening to olr for 4 years now. i have never heard another band that is as good as them. i have every song they have ever recorded. their music is intense, their lyrics therapuetic. there is not a problem that a olr song cannot help. and i feel sorry for the people who have yet to hear them. they need to be signed!!!!

    Comment by jenni — February 25, 2007 @ 6:40 pm

  45. One less reason is a very good band. Ihear about twenty seconds of a song and fell in love with them. Are they fresh or new not so much, but at the same time they make and play songs that people can and do relate with. They combine a lot of sounds and it actually comes out rather well. Their songs may not make you “think”, but they do make you feel. There isn’t a whole lot of that out there today. If I could find their cds I would buy them both in a heart beat. I say give them a chance you never know what could happen. They might even dethrone some of the “kings of rock” that are out there today. I know they have a better sound then most of them.

    Comment by Kyle — February 25, 2007 @ 6:46 pm

  46. first off one less reason is amazing
jeremy their guitar player is the guy that taught me how to play, they sold out 20,000 of their debut album on just pre orders alone im 16 and everyone i know thats 12-20 like them heck even my mom likes them, when they preform its amazing ive seen them 4 times and it never gets old and i will always go to their shows, they sound better than the cd when they preform right now they arent that old, the thing about everyone of their songs is that everyone in this world can connect with at least one of them, i connect with every song they have written, labels today sign bands no one wants to hear, and bands that cant put on a good show (ex. hinder, fall out boy, simple plan, the list can go on forever) i usually only listen to metal, but olr has made a new age of rock, no one cares how old they are (which by the way they arent as old as you think) they are amazing, labels today are stupid because they sign bands that end up splitting, olr has been together for 6 years and were friends before that, when they play its an emotional time for them, they have even better songs than if you want me though i do like that song, when they preformed favorite color at a show i went too, when the course caim everyone sang it the crowd was louder than the pa system, not to mention they sold out many shows, thats the problem today bands get signed and when they have a show no one shows up to see them, more of one less reasons music should be on the radio, i never really do listen to the radio because what i like is never played, i will leave the olr cd in and listen to it for a month stright and it never gets old, thats whats great about them, THEY NEVER GET OLD, BEST BAND IN THE WORLD IS ONE LESS REASON, and if you want to argue i will fight and win

When I found out they were playing in Dyersburg, TN I did everything in my power to be there. I don’t regret it, they were BETTER live! They have great sound, lyrics and style. Any album that they put out I will buy. I tell everyone I know about them in the hopes of building their fan base. Market them already people! ONE LESS REASON ROCKS! \M/

  52. “If You Want Me” is an incredible song. I absolutely *love* it. One Less Reason is great; their music combines different styles in a new, fresh way. Although I haven’t known of them for very long (I first saw the song on someone’s MySpace), I’m definitely a fan. As for the major record label, if that’s what they want, they should go for it. I’d rather see more bands go the indie route, but whatever suits them is fine.
Nate West’s addition of the song is fantastic. I would love to hear more unsigned artists on the radio! Mad props to him, and I hope he gets a raise!

This is one band that takes time to sincerely appreciate their fans, and that a hell of a lot more than a lot of bands do. These guys will go far.

  57. I don;t know about the rest of you but i have never bought a record because a band can match thier belt and shoes! It is time for a music revolution and that is never going to happen with whiney bands crying about cutting themselves and wearing LEI’s. It looks to me like there are alot of bands on here talking crap because they suck and no one gives them any attention. Well fellas get out of the way because One less reason a MFH will be the next big things. YOu say that OLR needs a image change but i just saw them in memphis at the New daisy SOLD OUT to 1300 people and 900 of them were women. Seems to me like maybe we care about music and music that makes you feel something. Not the trash record labels have been putting out. They are in trouble because they have focused on that crap for too long! I say fuck a label! One less reason and MFH would be doing these people a favor by signing to them. Music is emotion, not fashion. WAKE UP!

It’s important to have the listener be able to identify with the song. Most people I’ve sent their CD to identify with a majority of their songs!!

They Perform there real life songs that sound great and they have an aura of stardom surrounding them. we need more bands like OLR in music today. 66. Listen, I can honestly say I have never bought 2 cd’s where every song was this good. When you can put it in the player and watch a 4 year old little girl and an 11 year old boy sing every song word for word on both cd’s, what else can you say. They appeal to a 4 year old girl all the way to me as a 38 year old father. Their music has been a healing point in my life as well as inspiration. With all the subpar music being force fed to us daily, it would be a sin for these guys not to get signed. They put out the kind of music that stays with you for a lifetime and you can relate it to your own “Everyday Life.” Give the radio and the public what it deserves and give us One Less Reason!

I want them to get signed so that they can release their songs in Australia, and then come tour here and make me a Happy Little Vegemite.
I think the song is so awesome, and the reaction you get from the public should be pretty damn good.

  68. One Less Reason surprised me at a local show once. When I saw the singer, I thought they were gonna be just another metal band, but when I heard him singing about love and belting out tunes straight from his soul, I realized they were probably misjudged often. They’re a wonderful band with a bit of something to offer everyone, and I wouldn’t mind seeing them go mainstream!

    Comment by Emerich — February 25, 2007 @ 8:57 pm

  69. I think that One Less Reason has major potential to be one of the best mainstream artists out there if given a chance by a major label. I have seen them live every time they have came to NC and I haven’t been disappointed yet. I would even travel to catch an OLR show!!! They are a talented group of individuals that I believe could give Nickelback and 3 doors down a run for there money!! If you haven’t had a chance to see them live it is definitely worth the money, time and effort. If you haven’t heard OLR you definitely to give them a listen. OLR rules!!! I they will always have my support with or without a big label.

  71. It’s too bad “Favorite Color” got no promotion when they were on Universal, OLR would have gained plenty of popularity and we wouldn’t have to argue over their getting a chance at a record deal.
I say they deserve another shot now.

    Comment by Dallas — February 25, 2007 @ 9:59 pm

  72. ive only been listening to one less reason for about a year now but from the first time i heard favorite color i was hooked. yeah so what if there look isnt up to the standards of this hypocritical society…u dont want musicians too dress how any other normal lazy american dresses and i dont see how the matters. they have come a long way and never forgetting who they are and who there fans are cause without that your nothing in the music industry. there lyrics are about real problems that they and so many people like them have faced in there lives. they have impacted me like nothing ive ever heard before. so keep your trash talking to yourself just becuase u dont like there style doesnt mean they dont have what it takes to make it. they have done things that most unsigned bans can only dream of and that just means how great there success will be once they get signed. OLR is the greatest, keep rockin!!

  75. I guess I must agree with most of these posters and say One Less Reason could have a smash single.

Do they work hard to promote themselves and play shows? Yes

Do the music and lyrics sounds like there was a lot of thought and heart put into them? No

Radio wants more Nickleback and 3 Doors Down oriented rock. Is One Less Reason really necessary? It’s safe and never dangerous. The mind stays numb. Fuel their hunger for fame and fortune…not because 10 years from now we’ll actually hear their influence and still be talking about them as they had something to say? Who knows what this band would sound like if current hard rock never existed.

    Comment by A2daC — February 26, 2007 @ 12:46 am

  76. I think One less reason is VERY necessary to radio right now. They have two cd’s full of singles! The fray is necessary right now because any song off of thier cd could be a single. Digital downloading killed the one song record that labels were pushing us. Now to sell records bands are going to have to come with a whole record that has at least 4 or 5 good songs on it to make it worth our while to buy it. What the record industry needs to realize is we still buy music but only music we want to hear. keep peddling shit and they will be out of work in a few years. Its time to leave fashion to Paris Hilton and put music back in the music biz.

Personally if you have to convince me theyre good, then i dont care.

Also…whats with fucking bands these days? fucking garbage lyrics and hooks. Give me something that competes with rock bands like Linkin Park and i might actually care

(It’s obvious that somebody tipped off fans that we were talking about OLR over here…. sad there wasn’t even more of a response considering how big they are on myspace….regardless….) Yes, as stated above, we get it. You love the band. Excellent. I will say it’s interesting that I stated in the beginning of this thread, “let’s sit back and watch this band get signed…. they get radio play which will be a direct translation into cd sales, into venues being packed.” If that promoter was telling the truth, then I was on the mark…. I still do stand by all of my prior comments as well.

  83. One Less Reason is absolutely amazing! These guys poor their hearts and souls out with every performance and they sound just as good live, if not better, than on the cd. The passion and conviction that is displayed through Cris Brown’s vocals on every track is unmatched by any band, signed or unsigned, that I’ve seen in years.

  84. YOu have got to love bands that are going no where talking shit about bands who are. This may be an industry related site but we buy the music so we are the boss of the industry. I have seen OLR 3 times in the last two months. Sold out new daisy show in memphis tn 1300 people, Sold out Dyersburg Tn show to 500 people and I was in Jackson Ms Saturday night when they sold out 800 people and none of these places are even where they are from. OLR is the next Nickelback/Three doors down and you might think its boring but i guess you guys can listen to some interesting stuff while you are working your day jobs! hahahah Oh yeah i said it.

  85. One Less Reason is great .. now stop talking trash. They’re an actual band that will sell millions unlike all the crappy emo bands out there. My buddies played with them several times and they’re great guys.

  86. I sure do hope that I’m not the one being targeted as “talking trash”. I have done nothing of the sort, and have only been talking of the industry and it’s ways, citing facts and projections. If those facts/opinions/projections make you upset, then don’t read what I post. If you believe that I’m trashtalking, then you have completely missed the point. The original topic was that an assistant program director in MS, added an unsigned act onto it’s playlist and great things are happening for them (which, I do honestly say “good for them…”). Let’s keep that in mind and be mature.

  88. One Less Reason is by far one of the best bands I’ve heard in the past few years. I’ve been listening to them for the past year and a half now, and I’ve seen them in concert as well. Their music is amazing, their lyrics speak to events in almost everyone’s lives, and their energy is phenomenal. They have all of the potential to be a major force in the music industry, and they are constantly winning fans over with every new song they record and every new show they do.

    Comment by Set — February 26, 2007 @ 12:59 pm

  89. I’ve read this thread over and something strikes me. A musician friend of mine once said “I’d rather be critically acclaimed than commercially successful.” That has stuck with me…it’s an admirable idea, but in reality, it’s no way to make a living. It seems that people begrudge bands for commercial success, when in reality, the market determines what is successful. The music industry seems to be so busy looking for the “next new thing” that they have ignored what actually sells. Say what you want, but this is an “industry,” and that means that it must be profitable. As we all know, it’s been a struggle for some time. Many blame it on digital downloading, among other things, but no one in the business seems to want to admit that it’s the choices they’ve made, the bands they’ve chosen to push. Why is it that Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Fuel, and most recently, The Fray, sell millions when other, possibly more “interesting” artists don’t? It seems to me it’s the connection they make with fans. The songs evoke some emotional connection and the live performance makes people “feel” something. Maybe it makes them forget the problems of the world for a while, the stresses of work, money, and just life in general. Scott is right, people don’t necessarily want to be intellectually challenged when they listen to music. Not everyone is an “artist” or a critic. Some people like Oscar winning films, some like Talledega Nights…which one sells more tickets? You can’t force people to like something, they either do or they don’t. If they do, they buy it, that’s been proven! Is One Less Reason a groundbreaking, next-new-thing kind of act that’s going to change the world, maybe not. Are their lyrics poetic or artistic, who knows? Is their music super-technically challenging, probably not. They’re just good, solid, rock songs that tell a story that registers with listeners. People identify with what the songs say. And here’s the thing, as the Jackson, MS numbers show, when people hear this band, they want more! The VAST MAJORITY of music fans don’t want music that’s a math problem or forces them to think to get it. They just want the music to move them in some way. OLR apparently does that. If the band is making music that they believe in and it happens to sell, why is that a bad thing? The fact is, if the music industry wants to dig itself out of this hole, it might want to spend more time concentrating on what does sell and less time trying to make people like stuff that they don’t. It doesn’t have to be “different” and “cutting edge” to be influential and successful. And as far as radio is concerned, if there were more stations like Y101 in Jackson that were willing to buck the corporate trends and take a chance on some unsigned, relatively unknown bands that they believe in, there are probably a hundred other OLR’s out there that could sell albums and concert tickets and maybe then, music would really make a comeback. Sorry for rambling, hope it was at least somewhat constructive.

  90. Go ahead and bash emo, but I take a look at the promos pics of the guys and they are just carbon copies of the hard rock image. What the one guy has shaggy black hair in the band, he must be emo.

Nickelback are the kings of the town right now with Hinder right behind.

In all honest, I just don’t hear it with this band. I’m all for a catchy song, but I don’t think these guys will do a thing. I honestly think the best rock band out there right now is Red. Now that band needs to get big.

  92. quote: “if you want me is just more of the same. it is nice to see a station add an unsigned act but this is not going to solve radio’s biggest problem….

I’m not ripping on the band I’m ripping on the industry. The stagnant mindset of Radio and labels are a huge cause of the drop in sales. That attitude encourages bands and musicians to take the safe road and that in turn leads to generic music. Which in turn alienates younger listeners who increasingly have other ways to search out music. IE not the radio. The radio still has the capability to reach people, obviously and the Internet has not become the Savior of music. But radio is taking a lot of punches especially from the younger markets which they depend on. Wisen up.

Its sad because I want to see bands in the future sell 75 million rec like van halen did. That’s a cool thing to think that so many people have something in common. Good music used to do that with the help of the Radio and other outlet’s. Now we have one more tool to market: the Internet. How is that mainstream music is doing worse with a Giant tool like that? The majors are short sited. They’re picking easy money over fostering a creative climate for artist to produce NEW music. Its a stupid move. That’s like the medical industry making Tylenol — a great product—- then the generics pop up which is bound to happen and there is a place for them. But then saying were not gonna try and create new medicines because we’ve got a product that sells. WTF Wheres the Leadership in the CEO dept?

Does no one see the problem? How can we have this many mainstream rappers with Lil in their name? Lil Jon, like Wayne, Lil Kim, Lil bow wow, Lil skrappy, Lil romeo, Lil flip, Lil boosie, Lil webbie, Lil rob, Lil zane, Lil wyte, Lil troy, Lil mo….

WHEN DOES IT END? I know there are generic emo bands– there is generic everything everywhere but these bands aren’t getting mainstream press.

The MUSIC INDUSTRY has a problem with pushing GENERIC SHIT. Were all (consumers and artists) suffering for this attitude.

  93. What do you want to bet Chris plays in the band Red?:) What it all comes down to is we put people in buildings and sell lots of cd’s. And that is that. This is the music business and the goal is to make money and that is what we do. I will take being commercially successful over critically acclaimed any day. So everyone has their own agenda, ours is to make the music we love and our people love and yours is to reinvent the wheel. Best of luck in that. Great rock music sells to the masses and that is what we do. Lot’s of love everyone.

  96. Let me get this straight…an independant band is fortunate enough to get a single picked up by a top 40 station(an extremely rare occurance to start with, and in a market far from their hometown to boot, because someone thinks its a good song and takes a chance)…said single then becomes a top requested song and moves steadily up in rotation due to its appeal to the listeners, and the band then proceeds to sell out a 1000 seat venue…and this is why the music industry is in trouble????? I guess I’m a little slow, ’cause I’m not getting it. Seems to me they’re doing something right. Whether another band may or may not be “better” in someone’s “opinion” is irrelevent. If people like it, they will buy it. Apparently that’s the case here. If it was “generic shit” as stated above, I’m thinking that that would be reflected in the numbers. I realize that some of the “enlightened” amongst us believe that people are stupid and are just eating what’s fed to them while “real” music is ignored (a really great way to market your product by the way…insult the people you want to buy it!!!!). But the fact is that this is a business and maybe with a few bands that actually sell records, perhaps the industry will have some extra money lying around to support some of the more creative acts you seem to long for. I just can’t for the life of me understand why a band working hard and being rewarded with success because people actually like their music is a bad thing for the industry. Just because a few don’t think something is creative or artistic enough doesn’t mean everyone else has to agree. Geez, quit shooting yourselves in the foot. When a band proves that it can attract people and sell records, take advantage of that!!! I know that’s probably “selling out.” But like Jason Newstead of Metallica once said…”yeah, we sold out, every buiding, every night.” Or something to that effect anyway. You guys practically shove people away with this holier than thou, we’re smarter than you so buy what we tell you to attitude for crying out loud…and you’re telling other people to “wake up!?!?!?!”

  102. Who in the world of music business isnt critical of the music industrys climate right now? There is a reason for that. I wasnt ripping on OLR. I dont have one complaint about the song other than it being generic. Its well done. And Im honestly happy for the band for getting some radio attention. This has nothing to do with the style of the song and Im NOT suprised that the band would sell records. Ive bought generic tylenol and a nickelback record so if youre putting words into my mouth I guess Im calling myself a sheeple. But the fact of the matter is my comments arent directed toward OLR or their fans, family or the general public. My comments are for the artists and anyone in the industry who is insisting on putting out status quoe music.

    Comment by nathan — February 27, 2007 @ 3:04 pm

  103. This is the reason why the industry is at an all time low. MUSIC IS NOT AN AQUIRED TASTE! You should like it the first time you hear it or not. You shouldnt have to listen to it and say “well they tell me this is good so i am going to keep listening till i like it” that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard!! And someone on here said “let’s see how they draw away from home” Jackson Ms is 10 hrs from where they live and the New daisy in memphis is 13 hrs. No one here is saying that OLR will go out and pack every venue they play on this tour right now! But with a little radio play you will be the same bands begging to open for them this time next year. The time of real music is coming back, so all you emo kids need to get a sun tan and some guitar lessons because getting by on fashion is a thing of the past. Buy alot of posters to sell at your shows because no one wants your cd’s.

    Comment by Martin — February 27, 2007 @ 4:04 pm

  104. emo is the worst form of music i have ever heard. seriously its like punk rock, up tempo and loud so u cant tell the vocals sound worse then a dieing animal. not too mention the few words u can make out are about how shitty life can be and heartbreak and all that bullshit. and kids these days eat it up cause they think being emo is cool when in all actuality your a big fuckin loser. and back to OLR…like i said before great music, great lyrics and yes they do sound like other bands such as nickleback but u guys act like its a crime. nickleback and 3 doors down is what the public likes and if OLR is anything like them then the public is gonna love them. its not rocket science whether there lyrics are generic or not there catchy they mean something to the band as well as fans everywhere and that is why they will be successful. there are alot of critics on here but most of you dont even like the style of music they play you just have to put your 2 cents in where it doesnt belong.

    Comment by Matt — February 28, 2007 @ 2:56 am

  105. Emo is a word that has been thrown around. Do people know the past history of “emo” music? Rites of Spring, Sunny Day Real Estate, Rites of Spring, Moss Icon, and what not.

People these days associate the word emo to what is out there and what a band has been labeled. Even Cedric from At-the Drive In said anything can be considered emo if you look at it as emo = emotional music.

It probably seems like I’m defending the genre, but I’m not. I use to bash it, but I read up on the history of it, I changed my mind. Consumers are too use to relying on others to put a tag on a band. I’ve heard people say OLR is hard rock, I don’t believe that for a second. When I think of hard rock, I think of bands like Godsmack. But there you go, people labeling things.

I’m probably getting off the subject, but my main point is this. Time will tell with this band. They may of sold out venues around them, but until they can sell out places OUTSIDE of their area (House of Blues in Chicago) then I’ll start paying attention. But as of right now, nothing.

    Comment by Chris — February 28, 2007 @ 11:14 am

  106. Fuck radio, fuck MTV, fuck selling records. “Murder On The Radio” isn’t a hit and that band will never go platinum. The scene is too saturated. It’s all about what the audience wants. Kids don’t buy records anymore, they’re too busy downloading music, stalking their fav. bands on myspace, and pinching pennies so they can buy a new $15 t-shirt at their next show.

  113. Yeah but to compare OLR and Faktion is unfair. I am really exhausted on commenting this post. Time will tell. OLR will get a major label deal, thats if they havent already and we will be able to put this all to rest and see who is right and who is wrong. I can honestly say i think their Getting back your self esteem cd is the best cd i have ever bought. It has great songs from first to last and that is hard to come by these days.

    Comment by Chris — March 5, 2007 @ 2:12 pm

  114. you manage OLR, yes. i believe the only market making a bleep with the band right now is in jackson, mississippi, as i saw on the BDS chart this morning. and the band’s from ms so it’s all coming together now.

    Comment by Dells — March 19, 2007 @ 7:09 pm

  115. Uh…actually, the band is not from MS…might wanna get your story straight before you start bashing them. Jackson, MS just happens to be one of the radio markets smart enough to play their stuff as an unsigned act. The point of the post is that the radio play in Jackson has translated to very good radio numbers, solis sales, and sold out shows in a town that IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE BAND’S HOME. Again, do your research before you trash the band.
