Several A&R’s at EPIC were let go as of yesterday…..

A new study claims that Internet radio listenership has doubled. “There’s no question that listening to the radio over the Internet is well on its way to becoming more of a rule than an exception,” said AMS President/CEO Edward Seeger.

  1. Also, Static - X scanned like 32K this week…not too bad

  2. Static X has a solid touring base. They will never blow up, but they can still do a club run and bring in 700+ people. Good for them!

  3. I heard the new Chevelle cd once and I was like eh… not so much.
But its grown onme and they actually grew a lot from their last album.

Its either going to get some steam and do decent or its going to fizzle out pretty quick and get swept under the rug by Epic.

I am so amazed at how many bands are doing horrid follow up albums “sale-wise.”

I just wish that we could see a resurgance of quality and quantity, rather than sacrificing one for the other.

  5. Who was let go at epic?

    Comment by Jeff — April 11, 2007 @ 2:48 pm

  6. I have to agree with Rolling Stone Mag on the Chevelle CD..
Vena Sera is long on dark, drab near-metal like “Well Enough Alone” and the Helmet-esque “Midnight to Midnight.”

    It really is…

Also, I pulled the trigger to quickly on the Sick Puppies record. Other than a couple of tracks..its pretty lame.

The Daughtry record is great. Every song is a single ala Linkin Park. Producer Howard Benson did an incredible job putting the record together. Daughtry can sing his ass off.

  11. always wondered if a&r guys are like baseball managers.they seem to get fired when the team sucks.

  12. an A&R guy needs to find an artist quickly. If you have nothing to hang your hat on, it can be over quickly. If an A&R guy doesnt have an artist, he better be really good at politics. Some people, especially Presidents are extremely talented in keeping their jobs. You need some guardian angels and a good SALES pitch.

  13. The chevelle album is growing on me as well. I’m a huge fan and wasn’t feeling it at first, but its getting better. I’m glad they went for the harder, less melodic route (hard by Chevelle standards). Will this album go gold? I can’t seem to find a really strong single (and well enough alone aint it), was someone else able to? Also, does anyone else know what the first week sales for this type of thinking was? I know it sold over 700,000…

  14. KOAR…isn’t it also an A&R guys job to work for the bands that are signed and to take care of day to day problems?back in the day when we were with RoadRunner records our A&R guy would set up mag reviews and radio interviews and help with keeping track of sales and always called to find out how shows went.i’m sure a lot has changed from the 80’s but it just seems that an A&R is more than looking for the next big thing.to me a good A&R would have the hook ups with the E.T. lawyers and managers.what an A&R man or woman know and who they know must have some value.got to be a tuff job when a band fails and cost a label money some ones got to be the fall guy.now i kinda know that when i ask were’s the A&R guy? they say he’s at the bar…mmm

  15. A&R’s usually dont get involved with press. Labels have press departments. Usually artists that are about to get signed already have a lawyer and manager in place, again, NOT ALL, but most.

There are a few good A&R guys, but that remains a few. Most A&R guys dont keep their jobs because they are not well connected.

And the chevelle record will not go GOLD. Absolutely not, no single. If you dont have a single today, its tough to SELL records. NO HOLLYWOOD.

  16. Hope Melee’s “Devils & Angels” record sold alright, really solid piano rock album.

    The Almost scanned nearly 30k.

& one unheard of band that i think has that Daughtry/Nickelback appeal is San Francisco’s
American Radio who juding from what they have on their Myspace page could have “Lips of Angel” hit potential with a song like “Sweet Isabel”
    Great singer, solid melodic rock.

  17. Even though I would say the Chevelle album is a better work than their last effort, I will guarentee that it doesn’t come close to touching the numbers they did last time.
It does have more artistic value and, to their merit, it has some better harmonies and layering BUT it does not have a single, nor a single hook in the album that really would hit active rock radio.
    Just isn’t going to happen.

  18. Kings of Leon should be selling more. 41,000+ isn’t a bad number for a band the vast majority of Americans don’t know about. They sold almost twice as much in the UK. Their numbers would be much higher if they were actually played on the radio. If the US loves melodic rock so much, then how can these guys be selling like this? They’re a great band. (100x better than NB or Daughtry) Both their live shows and their CDs are top-notch rock n’ roll. Get them on the radio, and they will sell. That’s where their audience is. These guys have the potential of being a long-lasting band that sells out shows. You wonder why the industry is falling on its face- it’s because they’re not promoting quality music enough.

  19. The Melee album is pretty good. It took me a few listens though. I describe it as ‘Peter Cetera fronting Foreigner.’ I was so hooked on the song ‘The War’ from their last album, the new one kind of caught me off guard. It’s good though…a couple decent singles, but nothing huge.

Kings of Leon are an interesting band because they already DO sell out shows. They will be a great, long-lasting band with or without the support of commercial radio. I have seen them play twice in Oklahoma City and both shows were packed. Not the crowd you’d expect either. Lots of dude-bro type Nickelback fans there and they were loving it. I saw them play in Philadelphia a while back and while the crowd was big, it was mostly hipsters and indie kids. They have a large and diverse fanbase, and it seems to grow with every release. They’re a band to watch, but certainly not one to worry about.

  20. Re: American Radio

A band works with Hinder’s people and records in Nickelback’s studio and DOESN’T land a deal?

How can you have good radio songs in a genre proven to sell and work with all of the right people in that genre but NOT land a record deal? Not even with Nickelback’s label who seem to sign exclusively bands that sound like them (Thornley, Theory Of A Deadman, etc).

    It’s highly suspect.
