KOAR New Artist: The Upwelling

Posted April 24, 2007 — in Music News

NYC based The Upwelling are one of the rare bands that create art for art’s sake. Making them even more rare is how they successfully avoid the trappings of self-indulgence and are instead inventive, inspired and most importantly- listenable. Early comparisons have been made to Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Secret Machines, Spiritualized and more. They won Spin.com’s “Artist of the Year” in the “Unsigned Band” category, toured the UK with All-American Rejects, in addition to the current Third Eye Blind dates. The band recently acquired the tour with Third Eye Blind after frontman Stephan Jenkins got a copy of the album from a friend and reached out to the band, inviting them on the road. They were also the first unsigned band on Virgin Megastore’s national retail campaign “Virgin Recommends” and won Karma Productions Band of the Year Sonic Bids Ireland Tour.

“The band mixes the stoned-out moods of Dark Side of the Moon with the more grandiose orchestral manuevers of latter-day space rockers Spiritualized and Secret Machines, and Ari’s powerful falsetto would put Chris Martin to shame . . . “ says Spin.

  1. This band is lame, but more importantly I thought David Krebs (Aerosmith) was managing or helping manage this band.

  7. All the artists KOAR talks about DESERVE to be heard. Stop being a HATER. If you dont like it, move on to something else. You now live in a world that can grant you millions of options and choices. If you dont like chocolate ice cream, dont complain about it, eat STRAWBERRY!

  8. I chose this band for a number of reasons:

    1. Their songs are really good
    2. They have a point of view
    3. They are good live performers
    4. They are entirely independent
    5. They get along with press
    6. They create a vibe; live and breathe it
    7. They don’t sound like everyone else
    8. They are better than 99.9% of the demos we get here
    9. They don’t give a fuck what you or I think

I don’t think I really need more reasons than that to get behind a band. They didn’t ask to be on KOAR, I asked them if I could put them on KOAR. I like diversity in the music we promote. They didn’t pay us or pull a fast one. This selection was based entirely on their music, and I stand by it… even in the face of such laughably weak criticism.

  9. This band is one of the most talented, hardest working, most inspired, intense, kind bands I’ve ever known. AJ said it beautifully above, esp “They create a vibe; live and breathe it.” I am blown away more and more with each show I see.

  10. To me, The Upwelling is a much needed breath of fresh air. Although everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion, to dismiss the band as “lame” does you more of a disservice than it does the band. There are moments in some of their songs that are just magical. It’s beautiful, moving music and I am glad I’ve been introduced to it. In fact, The Upwelling EP is definitely one of my top 10 records of all time.

Oh, and they are the coolest bunch of guys you’ll ever meet.
