my favorite highway is much better than fob. they can actually sing, which is already better than fob. they are all very musically talented. although they let go drummer chris and lead guitar brian, they added people that add a LOT to the band and is just pushing mfh in a good direction. i've been a fan of them forever and i recognized their potential from the beginning.

'Indie rock' is a style of music, which is different from 'independent music' AKA DIY. This seems confusing, but it really isn't. Independent and AI are basically the same thing, although 'indie' generally implies a temporary lack of funds where AI is more of a long term lifestyle.

Being an AI band is basically saying you're committed to creating a career for yourselves that doesn't rely on old systems and methods. You really have no intention of scoring a label deal because you don't think they can do anything for you that you can't do yourself. It is in a way DIY, but also relies on a system of 3rd party companies with similar goals. It's taking advantage of the new opportunities presented by the internet while maintaining a belief that great bands are not made in the studio, they're made on the stage.

Some bands need labels, some don't. The AI is meant for those that don't. It's a big responsibility to take your career into your own hands like that, since if/when it fails you have no one to blame but yourself. But if/when it is successful, you get to take all the credit, and know that you made it on your own terms, without compromise. Not to mention the fact that you can make waaaay more money in the AI.

No matter which industry you choose to be a part of, the most important thing is the music and that will never change. If the music isn't any good and if the band doesn't have it together, nothing will happen. Labels abandoned artist development, but artist development is king in the AI. Artist development IS the AI.

ok AJ...but if i remember on this very site we had a conversation about the same thing when at the time the word "indie" band ment the same thing .a band that was going on it's own or starting it's own D.Y.I. label.and now i read that "indie" is some how grown into a style of music no matter how lame it's still a tag.i just contacted an fm radio station in Aukland New Zealand that will be playing our cd and told the program director that we are an Alternate Industry band and he said "like the way indie use to be".....well now maybe we do need a logo.

AJ...Alternate Industry...how long do you think it will be until a band or label "claims" Alternate Industry as a sound or style of music.
