"Sorry Tim, owning the copyright means nothing when music is free. Where is the ownership when something is free ? Isn’t this basic business? The only way it could work is that if you are giving away something and promoting a product that one has to buy."

Umm...or licensing it to a film, TV program or commercial?

Trent Reznor is label-free... recent entry from his blog at The Spiral (official NIN fanclub):

"Hello everyone. I've waited a LONG time to be able to make the following announcement: as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally free agent, free of any recording contract with any label. I have been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate. Look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008.

Exciting times, indeed."

Again, the average cost people are paying for Radiohead's new album is $11.00, according to NME.

Radiohead is making a killing, plus I'm sure the box set is getting additional sales at $80.

It's good to see the new leader of EMI realizing the need for change.

We haven't heard this argument too many times.

"Radiohead, on the other hand, simply do not need the money so I only gave them 9p"

This is another problem that has nothing to do with the lack of good music that's out there. I'd be curious to know the % of people that don't buy a certain CD because they think the artist is rich and don't need the money.

Now ... how can you solve that problem?
