The first half of the Thrice album (Fire) is more along the lines of modern rock like Deftones and Chevelle.

The second half (Water) is very ambient like Radiohead.

I'm still in the middle with the album.

I actually like the Thrice record a lot. It's a lot more rock and a lot less scene than the rest of their catalog. Very dark stuff.

Black Kids are still unknown and have plenty of room to develop. Bands have to learn the "build-from-the-ground-up" strategy themselves. You can still do that when you sign a deal.

Bands have to market themselves and not rely on the label to handle that. Most of the time, it doesn't work and the bands are frustrated as to why they aren't bigger. I've seen it a million times with bands that I personally know.

Empower yourself, realize how important these social networking sites are (myspace, virb, buzznet, etc) and build a fanbase the right way.

Nobody forced Black Kids to sign a deal. The majority of the public has no clue who they are. There's no reason why they wouldnt have been able to develop themselves over the next couple years, tour the country 12 times and write 200 songs.

It just gets complicated when bands who arent ready buy into their own hype, and sign a deal too soon. In that case, the only one who's to blame is the band themselves and their management.
