  1. Maynard Keenan is a funny yet borderline delusional man. Does he honestly think he stuck it to the major labels with the success of his side project?

I am a staunch supporter of new, non major album release models from already established artists. But I think this guy forgets his prior success and fan base has been hinged to the major label model who broke Tool.

Let’s put it this way–Tool’s last album sold 564k the first week. Keenan can say his side project’s first week “success” was “naturally” viral all he wants. He’d be a fool to think that anyone outside the small percentage of the aforementioned 564k Tool diehards actually bought this album.

Let’s not be dumb here. Anyone who is a loyal fan of a band will know about its frontman’s side project. And Tool is a huge band with a huge following. 27k is not really a huge feat.

You really got them this time, Maynard.

  3. Sometimes its better for artists not to talk and just sing. Sometimes artists opening their mouths hinders them rather than help them.

In maynards case, he doesnt seem to be that guy that sold millions of record and toured the world.

Bragging about 27k copies being sold with no promotion is lunacy. I think someone needs to remind Maynard that he sings for a band called TOOL and 27 thousand founds decided to purchase his album.

And whats up with Maynard wearing cowboy hat, a bottle of whiskey and a shot gun? Who does the think he is ? James Dean? a modern day cowboy?

  4. ok, so the majors are done and artists are back in control, or so they say.

This is the chance for artist to show the world how smart they are as business guys.

So far we have Radiohead who gave away CD’s for free. Con fans with poor quality downloads and says its GOOD ENOUGH. It Gave them good press, but stupid idea.

Prince gives away his CD’s and decides to Sue Fan Site then backtracks his statements. This guy should be a President at a Major Music Company…

Madonna signs a 120 million deal with Live Nation and says she did it for the music. Uh Huh!

  5. Yes, Maynard is definately on the edge and maybe delusional, but can anyone name another frontman of a modern popular rock band who’s side project has obtained these numbers at this time in the industry? I say good for him. Would he be bragging if he didn’t write thank you three times at the end of the blog?

  6. I mean I can name a few front man who had the support of Major Labels who had great success recently… Rob Thomas, Both Blink 182 bands.

But yes, there are none that I can think of who did so independently. But you’d have to think that if Rob Thomas released another solo album independtly he’d sell a helluva lot more than 27k…

So 27k is definitely nothing to turn one’s nose up at, but it is nothing to gloat about either.

  7. Maynard’s fans would by a CD filled with fart noises if he put it out.

Let’s look at week-to-week sales growth.

    THAT’S a true test.

  8. “just 100% street level, viral, word of mouth support”

yeah….i think this is easy to achieve when you front a huge band like Tool. so - the viral, word of mouth bit is lame. his credibility sucks too. i toured with that guy in 2003. dude’s head was bigger that his height. he toured with a karate master bodyguard that wore 7 jeans each night - hahahahahha!

  9. I love that Candlebox has their hits on their myspace. And that the songs are all available to add. However, the new songs aren’t good. I’m not surprised they signed to Silent Majority, those guys are still trying to push Tantric, the only band who out-bores Creed. Actually I take that back, this new Candlebox stuff might be more boring than Tantric. I sear whoever runs that label hopped in a time machine & skipped the last 7 years when all of that crap became the opposite of cool.

  10. I love Tantric’s vocal harmonies. I can’t say I got into more of their music aside from the singles.

  11. Making April is a sweet band and pretty much built a big, organic fanbase on their own. I believe they have sold over 80,000 songs on itunes, without a label.

Let’s see if Universal Republic can get them radio play.
