Superbug: Myspace Under Attack……

Posted November 11, 2007 — in Music News

Myspace has been inflicted with the biggest and most damaging virus to date. This new viral scam targets the younger users, and promises victims a free $500 Macy’s gift card. The headlines include “Hey dude, check it out! You ain’t gunna believe this!” or “i’m just hittin you up, as a friend, to fill you in on this exclusive deal to get a FREE $500 Macy’s Gift Card, yes, FREE!

The viral scam, which targets the site’s younger users, promises victims a free $500 Macy’s gift card. The spam scam steals the user MySpace identity and friends e-mails and posts comments on their profiles.

“It is an epidemic on MySpace,” PC Magazine Executive Editor Jeremy Kaplan . “It is a big problem particularly because of the pervasiveness of MySpace. Kaplan says he doesn’t think MySpace has done much to help solve the problem.

Alicia Keys’ Myspace page was recently hacked. Check out this video that shows how these viral spams incorporate malicious codes.

The Bottom Line: More and more artists are frustrated over Myspace and its ability to perform simple tasks. Updating the touring schedule, writing blogs, and communicating with fans can be a headache. Attacks on Myspace are rising as well as programs invented by thieves that allows users to steal songs on the Myspace music player. The techs at Myspace will be busy for a long time…

  2. You can’t possibly have just noticed this. The Macys things started back in March or April, along with iPhone ones shortly after. They’re not nearly as much of a problem now as they were back then. As long as you keep your password totally private and only log in to the MySpace page when you have typed in http://www.myspace.com yourself (a lot of passwords get stolen from fake login pages), you should be fine. MySpace also HAS done something to help slow this down. Now, before you post a comment on a users page, you have to type in a verification code every time. It actually gets really irritating for the normal user, but it’s done to stop the computers who make those “get a Macy’s gift card” posts from being able to do so, since they can’t read and enter the code. And you do realize any audio streamed online is temporarily saved on the computer before it’s played back, and so can be saved permanently… It’s hardly just a MySpace problem.

  3. Yeah, this was a big problem earlier. People just need to stop typing in their password when it asks for your password. The only time you put in your password is when the person before me said….when you actually type in http://www.myspace.com.

Cell phone viruses are doubling, every month. That is going to be a big problem, really soon.

  4. MySpace is on the decline. The younger audience that MySpace targets is moving on to Facebook and deleting their Myspaces. Social networking sites are turning into trends instead of solid, workable ways to promote musicians. The key for the music industry definatly does not lie in MySpace, nor any other site like it.

  5. Annie, you’re obviously not in touch with what’s going on - so please stop spreading rumors that “MySpace is on the decline”. Facebook is just growing faster at the moment, that’s all. And that’s a normal trend, since Facebook still has a lot of catching up to do. MySpace is still the #1 social networking site, and as long as Facebook cant create better music applications (for artists) than MySpace, it will stay this way.

  6. One more thing….

When you see huge companies like Fox, Sony, Microsoft and Google fighting over shares of MySpace and Facebook, you know something big is going to happen with those sites.

  7. New viruses inflicted Myspace this week and last week that prevented millions of artists to upload the tour dates. This was a bug due to the Macys viral spam.
