Posted February 26, 2008 — in Music News

Free Tracks: Today, Amie Street will offer thousands of free tracks from indie labels including Beggars Group, Matador and Polyvinyl. All songs on Amie Street are initially free but will eventually rise in price based on popularity up to 98 cents. Download away!

Perez Recordz: Celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton has been negotiating a deal that would provide him with his own imprint at Warner Brothers Records according to the New York Times. Perez could receive $100,000 a year as an advance against 50 percent of any profits generated by artists he discovers and releases through Warner Brothers.

iTunes Now Number Two Music Retailer in the US: iTunes is now the number two music retailer in the US, behind Wal-Mart, based on data from the NPD Group. There are now over 50 million iTunes Store customers. iTunes has sold over four billion songs, with 20 million songs sold on Christmas Day 2007 alone.

New Music: Your Vegas is an unknown act but these circumstances may change. The band is from Leeds, UK but recently relocated to the US. The David Bendeth produced record will be released in April through Republic Records. Check out the tracks Troubled Times and It Makes My Heart Break. These tracks place Your Vegas at the same level with gold selling artist Keane. Let’s hope the band gains some traction in the US.

  1. “Celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton has been negotiating a deal that would provide him with his own imprint at Warner Brothers Records…”

And is there any wonder the record industry is in the crapper? I mean, seriously?

This is how the majors choose to combat multi-year double digit drops in sales? By essentially hiring the internet version of Bobby Trendy as a an A&R man?

    Ooooookay.

  2. Perez wont break any acts. Most of his posts are signed artists. But Warner isn’t really paying him any money anyway. Perez posts news on Britney Spears, blogs about gay gay porn, and posts soft porn pics. Its a place for horny guys not music lovers..

  3. Perez Hilton is much more in touch with the music-buying public than almost any A&R executive in the business.

  4. sure Stu..whatever you say. Perez never broken in act. He rarely talks about new acts.

How do you measure “in touch”???? posts about spears?

  6. Sorry Lilly, but it’s true.

Maverick/WB shit the bed with that Eric Hutchinson project and dropped him… Perez wrote about him and the record shot into the Top 10 on iTunes’ sales chart.

Those ‘posts about Spears’ get read by 3 million people a MONTH. Mixed in with those are pieces on new acts that Perez likes.

Name me one other A&R person who can draw that kind of attention to an act he/she thinks the general public will gravitate toward.

  7. Also - side note - Amie Street has been around (and has struggled) for over two years, so the title of this posting is misleading.

  8. Great to see the comments about Your Vegas on here …. they are completely my favorite band at the moment. I recommend everyone gives ‘A Town and Two Cities’ a listen too.

  9. Your Vegas’ A Town and Two Cities is the best CD I have owned in ages. Every track on this disc get in your head and under your skin. Coyle Girelli’s lyrics and vocals are absolutely amazing. The keys, guitar riffs, drums and bass lines woven together by Jon Langford, Mal Taylor, Mat Steel and Mark Heaton will make you play this CD over and over again. From stirring ballads like Salvador to rocking tracks like Birds of Paradise, this CD is a winner. And let me say, if you can catch this band live, DO NOT MISS THEM…they are amazing in concert….and really nice guys too!

  11. I am telling you, Your Vegas is a must see live…just caught them in Atlanta and they were incredible. This is a band we are going to see a lot more of…I had a flashback to when I say U2 when they were pushing tunes from War and Boy and hoped to conquer the world…keep your eyes on these guys…I think they could be next!

  12. This band is cool. kinda thought some of these folks were just spamming us with all possie stuff about these guys…but gotta say, their sound is awesome. went to their myspace page and expected overproduced british fluff — but their tracks are solid in sound and lyrics. the lead singers voice just gets in your head. some really good guitar riffs and the drummer is solid. they strike some great bass lines and keys as well. unexpected harmonies just top it off. this band would really rock some us arenas.
