Rob Cavallo asked Shinedown frontman Brent Smith about his goals for the band’s new album. “I said, ‘You know what — when I’m dead and gone, when everybody in this band has passed or what have you, I want the world to remember this as a record that needed to be made, and that there was a reason for it,’ ” Smith says.

  3. I feel like Kid Rock should be saying “Copy your favorite products! Infringe upon the company’s copyrights, use your own resources to create a duplicate iPod or Toyota!”

Isn’t that the scenario? Like if I borrowed my friend’s Toyota Camery & then made an exact copy of it in my garage using my own resources & then gave my friend his Camery back? Is that stealing from Toyota? It’s certainly a different crime than just driving a Camery off the lot. At the very least, it doesn’t hit the middle man like it would.

So why not address the situation as it is? As a copyright infringement issue? As in copying when you don’t have the right to do so. That’s different from theft. It’s not difficult to grasp, & we’re 8 years into this issue… if we can’t even properly address the issue, how are we ever going to move past it? It’s a compound word… copy & right. It’s about copying & it’s about rights. Not theft. Not stealing.

Does that change anything? I dunno. Maybe. Maybe not. But if it doesn’t, why is everyone afraid of calling it what it is?
