New Video Stream, Signings, and The Last Days of Bandwidth Hogs…
Posted September 2, 2008 — in Music News
McCain Lifts Off With Van Halen: John McCain introduced Sarah Palin as his running mate with Van Halen’s song “Right Now“. Sammy Hagar has no objection to the Republican Party using the group’s song and said “When I wrote the lyrics to ‘Right Now’, I intended them to inspire people to not sit around and wait for something they believed in but to go out and get it, to make a change however they needed to”
New Video Stream: It’s been the month of Metallica. Metallica has posted the war centered video for the track ‘The Day That Never Comes‘ which can be found on their myspace.
Signings: Post Hardcore band Funeral For A Friend who was signed to Ferret Music and later Atlantic Records have now signed with Victory Records and will release their new album ” Memory and Humanity” on October 28th.
This Week Sales: Slipknot, the metal act from Iowa is expected to sell at least 200k. The band aimed for world domination early in their career and it seems like they accomplished their goal.
The Last Days of Bandwidth Hogs: Comcast recently announced that starting Oct. 1 it would set a threshold for monthly Internet usage. Users will be allowed 250 gigabytes of monthly usage. Comcast said its average residential customer uses approximately 2 to 3 GB while bandwidth hogs could typically use 250 gigabytes. Consuming 250 gigabytes would be comparable to sending 50 million e-mails, 62,500 songs, download 125 standard-definition movies or upload 25,000 hi-resolution digital photos. Frontier and Time Warner Cable are now moving toward imposing internet usage caps.
Universal Music Dodges The Bullet: The Rolling Stones jumping ship and joining Universal Music may have helped Vivendi meet its financial goals, profits for the quarter were up 12%. The rise of digital music is also contributing to the increase of Universal’s market share.
I don’t think imposing a cap is a bad thing. However it is a VERY bad thing that Comcast doesn’t have plans for those who wish to use more bandwidth. They claim that they’re just going to kick you off their service for a year if you go over your limit for two consecutive months.

New Metallica video = LAME! Its a decent song though.
New Slipknot - meh! its ok. nothing of theirs has yet to muscially top the debut album.
Surprise John McCain even knows who Van Halen is. Isnt he like 130years old?

I watched the video & I was like “Wtf?” I mean… on one level it’s super cliche, but it’s kind of a statement, like the One video, I guess. So I can’t be tooooo hard on them for that. But seriously… it’s so incredibly dull. It’s like they storyboarded a 3 minute video & were like “It’s 8 minutes? Are you kidding me?”
I’m listening to the new record and… there’s an Unforgiven III. And James is drenched in autotune. It’s very awkward to listen to, actually. Especially since the mix just isn’t conducive to that kind of treatment at all. The Day That Never Comes doesn’t sound very natural, either.
There are some really magical moments that remind you of what Metallica used to be, but there are so many “wtf??” moments that it’s impossible to take it seriously. Especially with all of the autotune on the ballady parts.

Re: McCain’s use of “Right Now” - what you fail to mention in your post is that the rest of Van Halen were none too pleased the track was used. According to band management, “Permission was not sought or granted nor would it have been given.”
KOAR - “fair & balanced” just like FOX News.

I felt kind of embarrassed after watching that new Metallica vid. The director should never do music videos, or film EVERY AGAIN!
The concept is lame, the actors are terrible. Did anyone notice the red smoke grenade? That shit looked like a 25 cent 4th of July smoke bomb. Not to mention the actor that was wounded was hit under his kevlar.
Also, is this song and concept better than Holy Wars? No! Though, a good idea for Metallica could be to do a song with Dave Mustaine again. Dave, Kurt, and James? Now that could be metal, cause “The Day That Never Comes” is not.

Francesca - those reports by van halens management are not confirmed. But with the left wing media spewing venom at Palin, I wouldn’t be surprised if those reports were false!

They’re confirmed by the band’s publicist, newworth…
