Rick Rubin To Exit Columbia? (That Was Quick)

rick_rubin

Fox’s Roger Friedman says Rick Rubin will be slowly removed from his head post at Columbia Records.

“I’m told that Sony Music may have found a solution to their mess with Rick Rubin. They’re going to quietly offload him to a side label deal, and remove him from the main company.”

Rubin faced criticism when he took the high paying job as co-chairman of Columbia Records. In fact, The New York Times said when it comes to scouting and signing new artists, producer-run labels have a spotty history.

Unfortunately, it looks like reality is setting in:

“Sources say, and it makes sense. As I told you last week, Rubin has been a costly adventure for Sony. He’s produced a hit album for another label — Metallica, for Atlantic — and several CDs that were interesting but failed to spark sales,” says Friedman.

It’s also been said that Rubin moved the Sony Offices from Los Angeles to the more expensive Beverly Hills – a risky move in a time when labels are shrinking.

Not only that, Rubin was recording tracks for U2 only to find out the band rejected his tracks.

Looks like Rubin got himself in a turmoil, regardless, we can thank him for the fantastic Metallica album. But next time, turn down the volume!

Record labels are funny. They sap the creative part out of procuring and developing artists by making them into mini businesses. But when it comes to hiring executives, they decide, “oh hell this guy produces great music, but has zero corporate leadership experiences…he’s perfect to run our multi gajillion dollar business.”

  4. davey says:

Rick Rubin is a wonderful producer. Columbia thought they could capitalize on his producer success by bringing him in house. Rubin’s success comes from producing amazing artists, not mediocre artists.

True Davey. Also, Rick Rubin is not your typical producer. He is like a little 15 year old kid listening to records and basically says if he likes a song or not. I think that’s amazing. He is also skilled at getting great bands into his studio.

  6. rich says:

Rubin was given credit for merging rap and heavy metal as well as producing the “American series” albums with Johnny Cash. MTV called him “the most important producer of the last 20 years.

You guys have all answered the big problem yourselves. Rick is an amazing Producer in the Classic sense of the word. Since the break out of Beastie Boys he’s been producing some of the biggest artists in music. The albums were great but in know way did he have to do any artist development, marketing promotion, on-line research and exploitation ect. He knows not enough detail of almost every aspect of running label or devloping an artist in the modern era of music for that matter. Really Columbia have no one to blame but themsleves. Rick should also give himself a slap on his own wrists for taking the money in the first place and saying that he can do it. Can you say cash grab!

  9. Dave says:

So Imagine if Rick would have stuck with hiphop and Defjam….HOLY COW…That was the move he missed, should never have jumped off that ship..he created it!
